What is a hollow point?
A Hollow Point Bullet otherwise known as a Jacketed Hollow Point (JHP), is nothing more than a bullet designed to expend after hitting a soft target. In most cases, human flesh. Below is a picture comparing a 9mm JHP to a standard bullet, referred to as "ball ammo".
These standard bullets are not designed to expand and therefore have a much cleaner penetration. Ball ammo bullets, like the one shown, are made of lead and have a copper coating or "sheath".
A JHP has a hollowed out shape in its tip which is what expands on impact with the target and in turn decreases the penetration and destroys all tissue in its path.
Law enforcement officers use these hollow point bullets in their service and carry weapons because of the capability of stopping a criminal in his tracks when deadly force becomes essential. The hollow point upon expansion tears through flesh and increases the chance of impaction inner organs or important bones and arteries.
The hollow point has become the #1 carry ammunition for law enforcement and civilians looking for protection in their homes and cars. There are numerous ammo manufacturers that produce hollow points. The highest ranking in reliability and effectiveness are Speer Gold Dot , Winchester, Federal, CCI, Hornady, and Corbon.
